First Python Notebook: Data Analysis on Deadline
Welcome to the Knight Center’s new course, “First Python Notebook: Data Analysis on Deadline,” organized by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas. During this four-week online course, which will be held from May 27-June 23, 2024, participants will learn how working journalists use computer programming tools to conduct data-driven investigations.
We’re excited to offer this opportunity to delve into the world of data analysis and journalism at a cost of $95.
For the next four weeks, you will work you through a data-driven investigation published by the Los Angeles Times and learn:
- How to use the Python computer-programming language to read, filter, join, group, aggregate and rank structured data with pandas, a popular tool for statistical analysis
- How to record, remix and republish your work using Project Jupyter, the emerging standard for generating reproducible research
Upon completion of this course you will be able to use Python and the Jupyter Notebook to explore and analyze data.
A certificate of completion is included in the $95 course fee. No formal course credit of any kind is associated with the certificate. The certificate is awarded by the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas to attest to participation in the online course.
To be eligible for the certificate of completion, you must:
- Listen to the weekly video classes and read the weekly readings.
- Complete weekly quizzes with a minimum score of 70%. (You can retake the quizzes as many times as needed. Only the highest score will be recorded.)
- Create OR reply to at least one discussion forum each week.
The material is organized into four weekly modules. Each module will cover a different topic through videos, presentations, readings and discussion forums. There will be a quiz each week to test the knowledge you’ve gained through the course materials.
Module 1 – The fundamentals of data analysis: it will walk through how to install Jupyter and teach the basics skills you need to create an interactive notebook and start writing code .This module will also introduce you to pandas, one of the leading open-source libraries for accessing and analyzing data
Module 2 – Getting Real: you will take on practical tasks with a real-world dataset. We will cover how to access, explore and improve a dataset published by the Los Angeles Times.
Module 3 – Interviewing your data: it will show you how to use pandas to examine, interview and improve data sources. It will cover the techniques you need to ask and answer questions with code.
Module 4 – Finalizing your finding: it will show how to prepare a rigorous finding that’s ready to report.
Ben Welsh is the news applications editor at Reuters, the world’s largest independent news agency, as well as a fellow at the DePaul University’s Center for Journalism Integrity and Excellence. Projects he’s contributed to have been awarded The Pulitzer Prize, the Library of Congress’ Innovation Award and numerous other prizes for investigative reporting, digital design and online journalism. A reporter, editor and computer programmer with more than 20 years of experience, Welsh frequently teaches practical technology skills to working journalists.
